What is the Odoo IoT Box and do I need it?

The IoT Box is a small device, based on a Raspberry Pi, that connects physical hardware such as receipt printers, scales, barcode scanners, cash drawers, displays and payment terminals to your Odoo database. You need it when Odoo POS, Inventory, Manufacturing or Quality must talk to a device directly, for example to read a scale or print a kitchen ticket, rather than through browser dialogs.

Do we need the IoT Box to run Odoo POS?

Not always. Odoo POS runs in a browser and can print receipts through the browser's print dialog and accept payments recorded manually. The IoT Box becomes necessary when you want silent receipt printing, a scale feeding weights into the ticket, a customer facing display, a cash drawer that opens on payment or a payment terminal triggered from the screen. Naqlah recommends it for any multi register or sell by weight counter.

Which devices are compatible with the Odoo IoT Box?

The box supports device classes including receipt and label printers, weighing scales, barcode scanners, cameras, cash drawers, customer displays, footswitches, measurement tools and payment terminals, connected over USB, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi or HDMI. Compatibility depends on the specific model and driver, so Naqlah checks each device against the supported list and tests it before you buy, sourcing from local suppliers where possible.

Does the IoT Box work with our existing printers and scales?

Often yes, provided the model is on the supported driver list. Standard 80mm thermal receipt printers with USB or network connections usually work, and many serial or USB scales are recognised. Scales used for sale by weight must remain SASO verified, which the box does not change since it only reads the certified output. Naqlah audits your current hardware and tells you what can be reused.

Are receipts printed through the IoT Box ZATCA compliant?

The receipt is generated by Odoo POS, and the box only prints it. Compliance therefore comes from the POS and Accounting configuration, where Naqlah sets the simplified tax invoice layout with the seller VAT number, the ZATCA QR code and Arabic text, and connects Phase 2 reporting through the Saudi localization. The box reproduces that layout on thermal paper at every register.

Can one IoT Box serve several registers?

Accepted Answer

Yes. A single box can connect several devices and be shared by more than one POS session on the same network, with each register assigned its own printer, drawer or display in the POS configuration. For larger branches or kitchens with multiple stations, Naqlah usually deploys one box per counter or station to keep printing fast and troubleshooting simple.
